SIKUMI (On the Ice)

A hunter on the frozen Arctic becomes witness to a crime.

"Filmed outside Barrow, Alaska, this short takes place on the beautiful yet terrible Arctic ice amongst the Inupiat peoples. The film’s dialogue is spoken in their language. A hunter, together with his pack of dogs, sees two men fighting on the barren horizon. From that point the film becomes a tense morality play, as the bystander must decide his level of engagement, and the participants must decide on the level of escalation. Further explication would spoil this simple, yet riveting story." Jason Sondhi, Short of the Week

Brazilian theatre director Augusto Boal dies

Augusto Boal, the Brazilian theater director and playwright known for the interactive genre called the "Theater of the Oppressed," died Saturday. He was 78.

Boal, who studied theater arts at New York City's Columbia University, created Theater of the Oppressed in the early 1960s as a way to establish a dialogue between audience, playwright, director and actors that encouraged political activism.

Seen as a threat to the dictatorship that ruled Brazil between 1964 and 1985, Boal was arrested, jailed and tortured before being exiled to Argentina.

He returned to Brazil after the fall of the military regime.

Theatre Promoters Should Harness The Endless Possibilities of Social Networking Sites

PR guru Mark Borkowski says there is no excuse for promoters to ignore the endless advertising possibilities of social networking sites.

Theatre marketing and PR, he suggests, should learn a lesson from 19th Century impresario Phineas Taylor Barnum, and embrace the potential of social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

Live entertainment, such as theatre, needs to embrace the opportunities offered by Twitter and Facebook to create and promote their brand identity.

"I believe it’s important to capture the imagination of the public in a technology-driven world of consumer empowerment," says Borkowski. Promoters have the opportunity to "create conversations with the audience - building a community that bypasses the usual ghettos of the arts."
